The Baltimore Orioles Recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Day at Camden Yards

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) announced today that the Baltimore Orioles generously agreed to raise awareness and funds for mesothelioma by displaying information about Mesothelioma Awareness Day on the stadium screen during their home game on September 26th.

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) September 26, 2012

On September 26th, the Baltimore Orioles will recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Day during their home game against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Camden Yards ballpark. As part of this initiative, on Wednesday, the jumbotron will guide the attendees to learn more about mesothelioma and to donate to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

“On behalf of all the individuals and families we serve, the Meso Foundation is grateful and excited about the Orioles' support,” said the executive director for the Meso Foundation, Mary Hesdorffer, Nurse Practitioner. “This kind of visibility helps us tremendously in advancing research and providing services to mesothelioma patients and families in need,” she added.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day was established in 2004 by a group of Meso Foundation volunteers from Pennsylvania who lost loved ones to this aggressive and incurable cancer, and who, as a result, wished to bring widespread attention to mesothelioma and the need for a cure. Since then, this annual occurrence has grown exponentially and now includes many awareness and fund drive events gathering thousands of attendees and supporters through locally-organized, grassroots events all across the nation.

Mesothelioma, a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos is considered one of the most aggressive of all cancers. Approximately 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year, and unlike most other cancers, for mesothelioma there is only one approved treatment regimen.

ABOUT THE MESOTHELIOMA APPLIED RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The Meso Foundation is the only 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma and easing the suffering caused by it. The Meso Foundation actively seeks philanthropic support to fund peer-reviewed mesothelioma research; provide patient support services and education; and advocate Congress for increased federal funding for mesothelioma research. The Meso Foundation is the only non-government funder of peer reviewed scientific research to establish more effective treatments for mesothelioma and, someday, a cure for this rare and aggressive cancer. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $7.6 million to research.
