Meet Mesothelioma Specialist Andreas Rimner, MD

Dr. Andreas Rimner’s work includes investigating the use of a more localized radiation to treat malignant pleural mesothelioma.Andreas Rimner, MD is a radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. A native of Germany, Dr. Rimner attended medical school at the Eberhard-Karls-University Tuebingen and later went on to complete his residency at Memorial Sloan – Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Rimner specializes in thoracic malignancies such as lung cancer, pleural mesotheliomas and thymomas. His research includes the effects of modern radiation techniques including intensity-modulated (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) for targeting thoracic malignancies (lung tumors) in an effort to minimize the exposure of radiation to normal tissues. Dr. Rimner is also researching new approaches to treating inoperable small cell lung using radiation therapy.

Dr. Rimner’s recent publications in the field of mesothelioma include:

“Novel radiation therapy approaches in malignant pleural mesothelioma,” which explored the effectiveness of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) on patients with malignant plural mesothelioma. When conventional radiation therapy is used in the treatment of meso, it is difficult to restrict the exposure of healthy organs and tissues. This study concluded that use of IMRT may be effective for the treatment of mesothelioma following extrapleural pneumonectomy, and called for more research to be done. Read more on this study here.
