Our Position on Asbestos

The mission of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation is to eradicate the life-ending and vicious effects of mesothelioma. We believe in a cure for mesothelioma.

Asbestos has been classified as a known human carcinogen (a substance that causes cancer) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the EPA, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Mesothelioma is known to be caused by exposure to asbestos, and studies show that prolonged exposure such as at a jobsite further increase the risk of developing mesothelioma.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation recognizes the need to limit the possibility of exposure to asbestos as prevention is an integral component of eradicating mesothelioma and we support a ban on asbestos. We believe that funding medical research is the crucial means to finding better treatments and ultimately a cure. Given the long latency period of the disease and that the fiber is naturally occurring, we believe that research is the most effective path to eradicating the disease. We believe that any ban on asbestos must also include funding for mesothelioma research to truly eradicate the disease.
