Before we know it, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation’s 2012 Symposium will be happening. Some of you may be joining us online (and welcome aboard — make sure you have your questions ready for the asking!), but for those of you making the trip to the Nation’s Capital, maybe you will want to plan an extended weekend around your time with us.
Sounds like a solid plan as there is a lot to see and do in Washington. Just off the top of our heads, we can recommend:
- The International Spy Museum
- The Kew Gardens
- The Air and Space Museum (but if you’re looking for the space shuttle Discovery, that is at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Annex in Chantilly, VA)
Along with these sights, there are some terrific exhibits geared for all kinds of interests in the week of the 2012 Symposium:
THE ART OF VIDEO GAMES
Smithsonian American Art Museum
The Art of Video Games is one of the first exhibitions to explore the forty-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects and the creative use of new technologies. (Running through Sept. 30)
JOAN MIRO: The Ladder of Escape
National Gallery of Art
Through some 120 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints from a career spanning almost a century, This exhibition reveals a politically engaged side to Miró’s work, including his passionate response to one of the most turbulent periods in European history. (Running through Aug. 12)
JAZZ IN THE GARDEN
National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
Now in its 12th season, this free concert series features an array of jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles—including salsa, blusion, vibraphone, and Afrofunk—every Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:30 at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. (Running every FRIDAY until Labor Day)
U.S. NAVY BAND FREE CONCERTS
Navy Memorial Plaza
Every Tuesday evening on the United States Navy Memorial Plaza, the U.S. Navy Band presents free, live concerts performed by the U.S. Navy Band. Their programming includes patriotic, country, and rock music and popular Broadway show tunes. Select performances also include the Coast Guard Band, a Navy drill team demonstration and a 50-state flag presentation. (Running every TUESDAY until Labor Day)
Screen on the Green: Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (July 16)
National Mall
Screen on the Green is a favorite Washington, DC summer tradition. Bring a blanket to the National Mall on a warm night and watch a classic film on a gigantic movie screen. Films are shown on Monday nights beginning at dusk, around 8:30-9:00 p.m. People start to claim their spots on the lawn as early as 5 p.m.
Capital Fringe Festival
Across Washington D.C.
Fringe lives in the present moment. Rebellious and adventurous.
We are asking you to cast aside your burdens and be in the moment with us. Come explore our centralized and unique performing arts Festival scene. Come and laugh, cry, clap, dance, make a fist or two, hug, make a new friend and brush away your troubles. (Running July 12-29)
